Some Frequently aske question on UV lights.

What is Ultraviolet (UV) Light? Ultraviolet light exists at the invisible, violet end of the light spectrum. Although we can't see UV light, we are exposed to a small portion of UV rays that the sun produces. The water treatment industry uses special UV lamps that emit UV-C light or "germicidal UV" to disinfect water.

How does UV work? UV-C rays penetrate the cells of bacteria and viruses in your drinking water, destroying their ability to reproduce. Unable to reproduce, these organisms die and no longer pose a health threat. The process is simple but effective: Trojan's systems destroy 99.99 per cent of harmful microorganisms without adding chemicals or changing your water's taste or odour.

Why not use chlorine? For one, many people object to the taste and smell of chlorinated water. But more important, if drinking water contains organic compounds, chlorine can react with these compounds to form chlorinated by-products such as trihalomethanes (THMs) that have been linked to cancer. UV light does not produce harmful chemicals in drinking water. It's safe, effective, and environmentally friendly.

Is pre-treatment of my water required for a UV system to work? The quality of your water will determine if pre-treatment is required. Three water quality characteristics can affect the performance of a UV unit: * Particles can shadow and protect small microbes from the UV light. Sediment filters can be installed to remove these particles in your water. * Chemicals such as iron and calcium carbonate can form deposits on the UV lamp's sleeve, reducing the light that can penetrate the water. Water softeners and iron removal systems may be required. * Some water sources contain chemicals such as tannins or humic acid that absorb UV light and reduce the light available for disinfection. After performing a simple test to measure your water's UV transmittance, your water treatment specialist can recommend treatment devices to suit your water supply. Water softeners, iron removal systems, and sediment and carbon filters are common pre-treatment devices used to improve water quality. The UV unit should always be installed following any other treatment devices.

How do I know what size of UV unit to buy? You can treat the water for your whole home or just the drinking water from one tap. Your water treatment dealer will help you choose the right system for your needs. Be prepared to tell your dealer your pump flow rate, the number of people living in your home, and the size of your home.

Does a UV system consume a lot of energy? No, the UV unit will consume about the same amount of energy as a 60-watt light bulb. UV is a cost-effective, natural way to increase water quality.

How often would I have to change the UV lamp? It is essential that you change the UV lamp once a year. UV lamps, like light bulbs, will dim with age and eventually burn out. Trojan designs its UV units to generate the necessary UV light intensity at the end of one year's continuous use. At the end of a year, your water will still receive the necessary UV dose for disinfection. Remember that UV light is invisible! The glow you see after the lamp has been operating for a year comes from visible light, not UV light. The lamp must be replaced after one year to ensure that your UV system continues to work properly.

What kind of warranty does Trojan offer? Trojan offers a full five-year warranty against manufacturer's defects on the water chamber, the circuit boards, the ballast, and all electrical connections. The UV lamp and the UV Intensity Monitor (on the 'Plus' models only) have a one-year manufacturer's warranty.

Protecting your whole family from harmful microorganisms in your drinking water is easier than you think. With Trojan, you get an easy-to-use, safe, chemical-free way to disinfect your water. It's the environmentally friendly, proven technology from the world leader.
